As of today, over 110 people – including children have lost their lives as a result of the deadly wildfires on the island of Maui in Hawaii. The number of lives lost and people injured is expected to increase over the coming weeks as crews sort through the aftermath of burned buildings, homes and cars. Although multiple smaller fires were reported across the island earlier in August, the fires affecting the city of Lahina in Maui started on the night of August 8th. According to Reuters, “The fire destroyed or damaged more than 2,200 buildings, 86% of them residential, officials said. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) estimates it will cost $5.5 billion to rebuild the town.” The National Fire Protection Association has identified the Maui Wildfire as the deadliest wildfire since Minnesota’s Cloquet Fire in 1918.
