How Listening Shapes Our Mission
Our mission has always been to provide humanitarian aid in a way that meets real needs while preserving the dignity of those we serve. One story, in particular, has shaped the way we approach this mission.
Several years ago, we received a generous donation of brand-new designer clothing, including many pairs of women’s jeans featuring rips, tears, and slashes. These intentionally distressed styles were highly popular and valued at over $100 each. Our team prepared to ship these items to one of our overseas partners, believing they would be a wonderful donation in support of their mission.
However, when we mentioned the jeans to our partner, he responded simply:
“We don’t need any more pairs of torn jeans — we already have enough.”
He was speaking from the reality of his community, where people lived in extremely poor conditions. While we saw “designer fashion,” he saw clothing that looked no different from the worn and tattered garments they already had. To those receiving the aid, these jeans symbolized poverty, not style.
What a powerful reminder that true compassion means seeing through the eyes of those we serve, not just through our own. The value of a gift is not determined by its price tag, but by how well it meets the recipient’s needs and respects their dignity.

Since that day, Gleaning For The World has been intentional about listening first. Whether responding to recent flooding in Texas or aiding long-term recovery efforts in North Carolina and Virginia after Hurricane Helene, we don’t simply send what we have on hand. We consult directly with our field partners which are the people who know their communities best so that we can help ensure every shipment meets specific, requested needs.
Our guiding question is simple:
Will this serve someone with dignity and meet their actual needs?
This means understanding not only what is needed but also what is not wanted or cannot be used. We align our efforts with the mission and goals of our distribution partners, ensuring our aid strengthens their programs and broadens their reach.
