A Commitment, Not a Calendar Date
Every November, as Veterans Day approaches, our nation pauses to recognize the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. We see parades, ceremonies, quiet moments of reflection, and flags placed with care on the graves of those who sacrificed for our freedom. These traditions remind us of the courage, strength, and dedication shown by our Veterans and their families.
At Gleaning For The World, we believe this recognition should not be confined to one day or a few holidays. Gratitude is not seasonal. It is an ongoing responsibility. Honoring our Veterans is a commitment we uphold throughout the entire year.
A Year-Round Mission of Care
Our partnership with the Salem Veteran’s Administration, the primary VA facility for our region, is central to this work. Each year, our Veterans Day collection helps supply in-patient and out-patient programs with items that bring comfort, dignity, and the reassurance that their service has not been forgotten. Yet our support does not end when the holiday season fades.
Across Central and Southwest Virginia, we work closely with organizations that serve Veterans every day. We join hands with the Lynchburg Veterans Council, the Farmville Veterans Council, and many others who walk alongside Veterans long after their military service has ended. The challenges they face vary from person to person. Some experience health concerns or financial hardship. Others carry invisible wounds such as loneliness or emotional strain. We believe no Veteran should face these struggles on their own.
Honoring Their Service With Compassion
Some of our most meaningful moments come through our partnership with Centra’s hospice program. There, we provide comfort items for Veterans in hospice care. A soft blanket, an encouraging note, or a simple reminder of appreciation can bring peace to Veterans and their families during a difficult season of life.
We are also honored to sponsor backpacks filled with travel necessities for participants in our region’s Honor Flight program, ensuring they can journey to Washington, D.C., with comfort and care. Thanks to the remarkable volunteers in our Sewing Center, handmade lap blankets are created for Honor Flight travelers and beautifully sewn quilts are gifted to Veterans at the National Center for Healthy Veterans at Valor Farm. Every stitch reflects heartfelt gratitude.
