Bringing Comfort and Joy This Christmas
As the Christmas season arrives, familiar music and cherished traditions often remind us of childhood memories filled with family, warmth, and anticipation. For many, this time of year is marked by joy and togetherness. For others, however, the season brings reminders of hardship, loss, and unmet needs.
At Gleaning For The World, we are grateful for the generosity of our supporters throughout the year. Your partnership allows us to bring help and hope to people facing some of life’s most difficult circumstances, both here in Central Virginia and around the world.
Natural disasters are among the most devastating challenges communities can face. In a matter of minutes, families can lose homes, possessions, income, and even loved ones. Recovery from these events often takes months or years and depends heavily on access to resources that are frequently limited. For the past twenty seven years, Gleaning For The World has responded to disasters across the United States. In recent years, our work has expanded beyond immediate relief to include long term recovery support. This assistance often includes new furniture, appliances, and essential household items that help families turn a house back into a home. Currently, our disaster response and recovery efforts are active in Texas, Western North Carolina, and Jamaica.
Through our Teddy Bear Brigade, we provide comfort to children facing extremely difficult situations, including medical illness, domestic abuse, homelessness, and the aftermath of natural disasters. During the holiday season, requests for stuffed animals increase significantly. These simple items offer more than comfort. For many children, a new stuffed animal becomes a source of reassurance and companionship during times of fear and uncertainty.
When preparing international shipments for the holidays, planning begins months in advance to ensure children in orphanages and impoverished communities receive a gift on Christmas Day. Thanks to a diverse and abundant inventory, Gleaning For The World is able to distribute thousands of stuffed animals each year. To date, more than 700k stuffed animals have been shipped to children around the world. Each one represents care, dignity, and compassion.
Here in our own Central Virginia community, Gleaning For The World provides in kind donations throughout the year to partners serving families living near or below the poverty line, homebound individuals, Veterans, social service agencies, domestic violence shelters, pregnancy centers, and many others. During the Christmas season, we work alongside churches, schools, and community organizations to distribute toys, games, and stuffed animals to hundreds of children. These gifts do more than fill space under a tree. They remind families that they are seen, valued, and supported.
