HONORING OUR VETERANS
Today, as a nation, we take time to honor our military Veterans.
For many of us, our lives are filled with, and surrounded by, Veterans – spouses, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, co-workers, neighbors, volunteers. That’s why Gleaning strives to honor our Veterans year-round through our partnership with the local Veterans Affairs hospital and clinic, as well as through our partnership with Veterans groups in central Virginia.
Each month, we check in with the VA clinic in Lynchburg to see how we can meet their needs. Usually, those phone calls result in a monthly delivery of bottled water, hygiene supplies, new socks, even reading materials for Veterans receiving medical care at the clinic. Additionally, during the month of December we like to provide extra items such as notepads, books, magazines, and snack foods that will be included in Christmas baskets which are given out to Veterans all month long.
Recently, we donated 250 pairs of socks, along with warm blankets and face masks for a Stand Down held in Salem, VA. A Stand Down is an event in which Veterans Affairs staff and volunteers provide food, clothing, and health screenings to homeless and at-risk Veterans.
We’ve also committed to providing 100 pairs of new socks each month for the next 12 months to our area Hospice services which will be given to Veterans with life-limiting illnesses in Lynchburg, Farmville and Bedford, Virginia.
