At Gleaning For The World, we have the privilege of working with many dedicated partners who are making a real difference in the world. One of those partners is Dr. Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, a long-term friend and collaborator who serves as the Chair of the English Department at Liberty University. Born and raised in Ghana, West Africa, Dr. Yaw has dedicated much of his life to helping his home country through various projects, including a unique initiative that we are honored to support-the Lifeline Christian Radio Station.
A Divine Opportunity
About five years ago, Dr. Yaw’s quest to gather tools for communities in Ghana took an unexpected and miraculous turn. During a search at a yard sale, he encountered Mr. Curtis Young, a devout Christian who generously donated radio transmitters and equipment. This unexpected blessing became the foundation for establishing the Lifeline Christian Radio Station in Apam, Ghana.
Building the station was no small feat. From shipping the equipment to obtaining licenses and setting up infrastructure, it was a journey filled with faith, perseverance, and countless challenges. With the help of Gleaning For The World, Dr. Yaw was able to ship the necessary components to Ghana, making the vision of a Christian radio station a reality. Over a year ago, the station successfully launched, and since then, it has been broadcasting sound Christian doctrine to an audience of over 800,000 people. On a good day, the station’s reach extends even to parts of Accra, the capital city of Ghana.
A Radio Station with a Mission
The purpose of Lifeline Christian Radio Station is clear and unwavering: to broadcast the teachings of Christ and sound Christian doctrine to save lives. This mission has inspired not only Dr. Yaw and his team but also the local community and listeners who rely on the station for spiritual nourishment.
However, like many grassroots initiatives, maintaining the station has proven to be a challenge. The station faces financial hurdles related to staff salaries, broadcasting costs, equipment maintenance, and fuel for generators to keep the station on-air during power outages. Operating the station costs approximately $1,500 per month, and without advertisements or commercial support, sustaining this ministry relies solely on donations.
A Call for Support
Dr. Yaw has reached out with a creative and thoughtful plan to gather support. By encouraging 500 people to donate just 10 cents a day, amounting to $3 a month, the station could secure the $1,500 needed to stay operational and continue its mission. While Gleaning For The World typically focuses on shipping in-kind humanitarian aid supplies, we see this project as an extension of our mission in that we are providing not just physical relief but also spiritual hope.
Challenges and Prayer Requests
Pastor Charles Koomson, another dedicated partner of Dr. Yaw in Ghana, has also shared some of the obstacles they face. The new government regulations in Ghana have already led to the shutdown of seven FM stations. The Lifeline Christian Radio Station remains vulnerable, but Pastor Koomson continues to advocate for support and partnerships with local churches to share sermons and Bible teachings on-air.
Meanwhile, Brian Taylor from Liberty University has expressed his commitment to helping the radio station thrive. The support from people like Brian and the dedicated efforts of Dr. Yaw and Pastor Koomson demonstrate the unwavering faith behind this initiative.
