HURRICANE RESPONSE JUNE 2021

June 15, 2021 | CONCORD, VA: The officials at NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) have predicted a 60% chance of experiencing an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season this year. Forecasters predict a likely range of 13 to 20 named storms, with the probability of 6 to 10 of those becoming hurricanes.

Of the predicted hurricanes, they foresee 3 to 5 major storms in 2021.

This year’s official hurricane season began on June first, and the staff at Gleaning For The World is ramping up their disaster response program.

The nonprofit organization will be hosting a disaster relief collection at Sam’s Club on Wards Road in Lynchburg this Friday and Saturday, (June 18 & 19) from 10am until 6pm each day.

Supplies collected this week will be held in preparation of Gleaning’s hurricane response in 2021.

“We want to get a head start collecting disaster relief supplies this year,” Gleaning’s president, Jeane Smiley-Mason, said. “When disaster strikes, our team works as quickly as possible to collect critically-needed supplies and send them on their way to those affected by these massive storms. The sooner we can get a truck loaded, the sooner we can get the truck on the road.”

Gleaning For The World is asking the public to donate new, unopened, and unused supplies such as nonperishable foods, sports drinks, paper household goods, baby supplies, pet foods, hygiene items, and cleanup supplies such as gloves and trash bags.

The organization will be conveniently located with their 53-foot tractor trailer in front of Lynchburg’s Sam’s Club, which is a central location to most places in the Lynchburg area. Donors are welcome to shop at any store and drop off the supplies at Gleaning’s truck. Online shoppers can donate through Gleaning’s Disaster Relief Amazon Wish List, which can be found at GFTW.org/wishlist. Items purchased through the Amazon Wish List will be shipped directly to Gleaning For The World.

Monetary donations for Gleaning’s disaster response program can be made in-person during the collection, or online at GFTW.org/relief. Checks can be mailed to GFTW PO Box 645 Concord, VA 24538.

“We truly appreciate the community’s support of our disaster relief efforts,” Smiley-Mason continued. “Because Gleaning’s supporters give so generously – together, we are able to help families and individuals during their most devastating moments after disaster strikes. We thank you for your past support and we look forward to seeing our Gleaning family this week during our first disaster relief collection of 2021.”
