Turning Compassion Into Action Right Here At Home
In a world often overwhelmed by headlines of hardship and crisis, it’s easy to forget that some of the most meaningful change begins right at home. At Gleaning For The World, we believe that compassion starts in our own backyard—and that’s exactly what our “Helping Our Neighbors” program is all about. Gleaning may be known for sending supplies to disaster zones, both domestically and internationally, but the “Helping Our Neighbors” program is close to our hearts – it literally is helping our neighbors, right here in Central Virginia.
This program is dedicated to meeting urgent needs for individuals and families in our own communities. Every week, we hear from our distribution partners about families facing hardships—job loss, sudden medical expenses, unexpected home repairs, or emergencies that stretch already tight budgets. For many, a small amount of assistance can make the difference between going without and finding hope.
Helping Our Neighbors
Through Helping Our Neighbors, we partner with our local receiving groups including pregnancy centers, women’s violence shelters, social services, church pantries, veteran’s services, and other community and civic groups. Our Concord warehouse serves as a hub where essential items—such as nonperishable food, hygiene supplies, baby needs, blankets, and household goods—are collected, sorted, and distributed. Whether for children needing back-to-school supplies, a single mom trying to make ends meet, or a Christmas toy, we do our best to help.
The strength of Helping Our Neighbors lies in the generosity of our supporters (individual and corporate). Because of your donations—both financial and material—we are able to keep our shelves stocked and our trucks ready to roll. Many of these items come from local businesses that choose to share excess products or sponsor drives. Every contribution, large or small, is transformed into real help for someone in our community.
We believe that helping our neighbors is more than charity—it’s an investment in the strength and unity of our community. When neighbors care for one another, it builds bonds of trust, kindness, and resilience. It reminds us that we’re not alone in life’s struggles and that together, we can weather any storm.
The needs we address are as varied as the people we serve, but our goal is always the same: to show compassion and provide tangible help when it’s needed most. Year in and year out, Helping Our Neighbors has delivered thousands of pounds of food, and essential supplies throughout the Greater Lynchburg area and surrounding counties. Every box packed, every blanket given, every family assisted carries a message of hope—“You matter! You are not forgotten!”
