How Gleaning Helps Families Rebuild Their Lives
As Thanksgiving approaches and many of us gather around our tables to reflect on the blessings of warmth, security, and a place to call home, we are reminded that not everyone shares these comforts. For some families recovering from natural disasters, the journey toward normalcy begins with something as simple as a chair, a table, or a bed.
A Couple’s Strength Amid Disaster
One couple we recently served, helps illustrate this reality. The husband is disabled and relies on a wheelchair. His wife lives with partial paralysis after a stroke. Their lives were already filled with daily challenges, and when Hurricane Helene damaged their home last year, everything changed. They joined thousands of families across the region whose homes and lives were disrupted in a matter of hours.
For more than twenty-five years, Gleaning For The World has responded quickly when hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods strike. Our team brings emergency supplies when the nation is watching, and our volunteers and partners act with urgency to meet immediate needs. But the work does not end there. In recent years, we have expanded our mission to include long-term recovery support because we have learned that rebuilding does not happen in days or weeks. For many families, restoration takes months or even years.
When survivors finally receive the keys to their repaired or rebuilt homes, they often walk into empty rooms. Insurance rarely covers furniture or household essentials, and many families do not have the financial means to replace what was lost. That is why Gleaning is committed to staying the course. Through partnerships with long-term recovery groups and local retail stores, we help families settle back into their homes with dignity, comfort, and the basic items they need to begin again.
When this courageous couple learned that Gleaning had arranged for them to receive new furniture from a local store, something extraordinary happened. The wife began to cry. Through her tears she told our team that she had never owned new furniture in her entire life. Her gratitude was overwhelming, and her story reminded us of the deeper meaning behind every sofa, table, or mattress delivered. These items represent dignity, stability, and hope.
Your Support Makes This Work Possible
This is the impact you help create when you support Gleaning For The World. Because of generous partners, donors, and volunteers, we will continue walking alongside families in long-term recovery, offering everything from essential supplies to new beginnings filled with comfort and care.
Gratitude for Our Partners and Community
This season, we are grateful for so many things:
- We are grateful for the partners who provide quality surplus goods that fill homes with warmth and comfort.
- We are grateful for the organizations that trust us to serve alongside them in times of need.
- We are humbled by the resilience of the families we encounter, who meet hardship with strength and determination.
- And we are especially grateful for supporters like you who make all of this possible.
Together, we are giving families more than furniture. We are giving them dignity, comfort, and the reassurance that they have not been forgotten.
As the Thanksgiving season approaches, will you partner with us to continue this work? Whether it’s $50, $100, $250, $500, $1,000 or more, every gift helps us continue responding to disasters.
