A Journey Through Tragedy To New Beginings

In the aftermath of the devastating EF3 tornado that struck Amory, Mississippi on March 24, 2023, Gleaning, known for its swift response to disasters, joined forces with local non-profit Monroe Strong to provide long-term assistance to families in need. This collaborative effort aimed to bring hope and support to a community grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.

Responding to Immediate Needs

Gleaning wasted no time in responding to the immediate needs of the community, dispatching two tractor trailer loads of life-saving supplies. Local, state, and federal agencies worked tirelessly to address the urgent requirements of the affected individuals and families. Monroe Strong emerged as the Long-Term Recovery Group, coordinating resources to guide families through the prolonged recovery process.

Rebuilding Moore Manor Apartments

Among the affected areas was Moore Manor Apartments, where 26 families, comprising 63 individuals, faced significant challenges in returning home due to severe damage. Working closely with Monroe Strong, Gleaning identified a local furniture store willing to provide quality furniture at cost. Additionally, a tractor trailer filled with table tops and assorted home goods was sent to ensure these families had the essentials for their homecoming. By December 2023, all 26 families celebrated their long-awaited return, marking the culmination of a collaborative effort that made a lasting difference in their lives.

Lindsay Mitchell and the Special Project

One notable project involved a single mother with a special needs child suffering from severe respiratory issues. The family’s home had sustained damage, including black mold, exacerbating the child’s health problems. Lindsay and her team, facing their own challenges after their home was damaged, prioritized helping this family, moving them to temporary housing, and spearheading extensive repairs. Despite personal setbacks, Lindsay and her team completed the project before Christmas, showcasing their remarkable dedication to the community.

Homecoming Celebrations and Heartwarming Stories

At the homecoming party for the residents of Moore Manor Apartments, Gleaning had the privilege of connecting with families like Martina’s. Martina, a single mother of three, had faced immense challenges when the modest apartment she shared with her mother was rendered unlivable by the tornado. Barely escaping unharmed, Martina spent eight months navigating homelessness, living with a friend’s crowded household. During this time, her mother’s health declined, and despite being in a nursing home, they continued to dream of reuniting in their rebuilt apartment.

At the homecoming party, Martina’s three children, delighted with the stuffed animals provided by Gleaning’s Teddy Bear Brigade Program, shared their joy, emphasizing the significance of these simple gestures amid tight circumstances. The resilience of Martina’s family serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring impact that compassionate support can have on those striving to overcome adversity.
